Are achievements harmful?

Chris Hecker gave a interesting talk at GDC questioning if achievements can actually be harmful to the user experience. The talk gives no clear answers but kicks off some healthy debate by asking the question, are they?

"The intrinsic reward for knifing dudes is knifing dudes."
