Think you know your market?
Marketing, it's a dirty word to some.. However, if you want your game to actually pay the rent then it's something you absolutely need to understand and invest in.
The Entertainment Software Association (
the ESA), an American association that looks to serve the business and public affairs needs of companies publishing interactive games for video game consoles, handheld devices, personal computers and the Internet (so pretty much everything really!) recently published their 2010 study of sales, demographic and usage data for the video games business.
We think this is essential reading for everyone involved in any aspect of game development. Understanding what the market is currently playing is hugely important to everyone from large scale game developers or publishers to indie game makers. It's all well and good to be out there creating new genres and breaking new ground... but without an understanding of what it is players are looking for, you might find you are creating the next 'could have been' rather than the next
mega hit.
It never hurts to be in command of all of the facts before you start on any project, so we reckon this is worth a quick read next time you take a bathroom break.
